Indie Spotlight: Rob Milton
Rob Milton is an extremely talented and versatile artist who continues to rise in the contemporary R&B sector. I first became acquainted with Milton in our undergrad years singing for the world renowned Virginia State Gospel Chorale back in 2008. As the years progressed, Milton transitioned from gospel to secular musical stylings. He has released 3 EP’s and a live album. Milton also received recognition from press outlets such as AfroPunk, Ebony and Saint Heron. I really want to thank him for taking the time out to conduct my first mini interview!
The Music Serket : Thank you Rob for carving out some time to interview with us
Rob: Thanks for having me !
MS: What first got you into music?
Rob: I legitimately cannot remember a day of my life that I was not into music. I remember as I kid I would hear a song on the radio and by the next time it came on, I knew every word. So God? yeah. God. Family. Life.
MS: Faith is very important in this industry .
MS: Who inspired you to make music?
Rob: I’ve been singing and creating my whole life, but recording “Lazy” with Jacque Hammond back in 2011 really inspired me in a way that I had never experienced before. I’ll never forget Jacque telling me that once I started recording, I would never want to stop. it’s almost 10 years later and she was absolutely right!
MS: Its like once you commit, you become fully invested .
Rob: Exactly!
MS.: How would you describe the music that you typically create?
Rob: Black. first and foremost my music is Black. it’s R&B most days. gospel some days. it’s rock. it’s pop. I really enjoy being able to create whatever I’m feeling!
MS: We don’t hear too many artist genre mixing these days ; it’s refreshing to see you doing that .
Rob : Thanks
MS: So, What is your creative process like?
Rob: It depends on the moment! It can go from grabbing my phone to record an idea via voice memo. It can be locked in the studio for hours building fresh ideas. The most important thing is creating a space where I’m comfortable enough to let my creative energy flow freely!
MS: Talk about your previous/current projects. Run Away is my jam right now . It’s a bonafide hit!
Rob: (Chuckles):
2019 I dropped an EP called Stay that I was blessed to be able to tour and play in Stockholm, Sweden, Nashville, Tennessee and here in Atlanta.
I’m also a member of an R&B band named Cousin. We released Cousin, Volume 1 last year as well along with some really dope visuals.
And then at the top of March I dropped my solo maxi-single “Run Away.” I’ve been working!
MS: Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Rob: I always try to switch these up because I have way too many. I’d love to work with Brandy. Like have her vocal produce my record? OMG.
MS : Brandy’s voice is unparalleled.
MS: What’s next ?
Rob: Coming up next is my remix EP! Everybody knows I love a good remix. With all that’s going on, I extended the opportunity to some of the homies to remix my single as a part of the Run Away Remix Challenge and I got back some heat. It’s crazy! So that’s coming. Plus a bunch more. I have some really long overdue things happening this year.
