Kehlani: It Was Good Until It Wasn’t
All relationships begin with the honeymoon phase in hopes that each others time is reciprocated and not wasted. One woman’s “He might be the one” can quickly turn into “lose this number”. This wave of R&B these days not only covers the bases of “situationships”, but provokes the age old question of trust. Kehlani ‘s latest effort “It Was Good Until It Wasn’t” covers this. Why can’t we learn to love in R&B anymore? I enjoyed this album with the interpolations of 2000’s Hip-Hop/R&B that most of the newer artist to broaden their lyricism. However, Kehlani has defined to what many of us have constantly endured throughout our 20s and early 30s.
I enjoyed the astrological song “Water” which is an ode to my fellow male water signs. The other was “I Hate The Club” which deals with a potential run in with someone you’re trying to avoid or you really want to see. Kehlani states, “ No matter what happens with this album, this might be my favorite project I’ve ever put out.
