On April 23, 2016, singer/songwriter Beyoncé released her most personal album to date; Lemonade.  This effort distanced herself from her previous works due to its heavy political undertones.  Accompanied by her award winning eponymous short music video film, Beyoncé revealed herself in such a way that the global stage had never seen before.  She displayed her anger and range towards infidelity and “misogynoir” throughout the album with tracks such as Hold Up, Sorry, Love Drought & Don’t Hurt Yourself. Beyoncé also addressed the importance of father-daughter relationships with Daddy Lessons. However, the standout track Formation is arguably when she evolved as an artist. The video highlighted African-American culture and  dealing with the unbearable trauma we’ve faced as a whole. Beyonce continues to carry this theme of Black admiration and pride well into this decade Lemonade was the album that transformed Beyoncé.    

This album took a while to grow on me. From the persistent theme of relationships and self-worth, at 30 I still have room to grow. I find myself less resentful as I try to redefine myself. I still believe that Beyonce was robbed of music highest honor of Grammy Album of The Year in 2016.
